Fidel V. Ramos was a true soldier/statesman. A graduate of the United States Military Academy, he fought alongside American forces in both Korea and Vietnam. He was an immense credit to the military profession. And in the wake of profound political changes in his country in 1986, he served as Defense Secretary in the Cabinet of President Cory Aquino and then became President himself during the years 1992 to 1998, a period of economic prosperity and relative political calm for the Philippines.

I was privileged to serve as United States Ambassador to the Philippines from 1993 to 1996 and had the honor to work very closely with President Ramos and his team during that time, including for a visit by President Bill Clinton and Mrs. Hillary Clinton to Manila in November 1994. In these and other meetings, President Ramos helped lay the basis for a fruitful and constructive relationship between our two countries in the post-bases period.

Fidel Ramos will be well remembered in our country.
