Philippine Presidential Elections: Congratulatory Messages

The US-Philippines Society invites your attention to congratulatory messages from President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken to President-elect Marcos, and a response from the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs.

White House Statement Following a Presidential call from Air Force One on May 11

“President Biden underscored that he looks forward to working with the President-elect to continue strengthening the U.S.-Philippine Alliance, while expanding bilateral cooperation on a wide range of issues, including the fight against COVID-19, addressing the climate crisis, promoting broad-based economic growth, and respect for human rights.”

State Department Release, May 11, with the following statement from Secretary Antony Blinken

“On behalf of the United States, I congratulate President-elect Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on his election as the Philippines’ next president. We look forward to working with President-elect Marcos to strengthen the enduring alliance between the United States and the Philippines. Our special partnership is rooted in a long and deeply interwoven history, shared values and interests, and strong people-to-people ties. As friends, partners, and allies, we will continue to collaborate closely with the Philippines to promote respect for human rights and to advance a free and open, connected, prosperous, secure and resilient Indo-Pacific region. We commend the millions of Filipino voters who cast their ballots in this election, and we look forward to the official conclusion of the electoral process for the many offices in the national elections.”

Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs response, May 12

“We welcome the congratulatory messages coming from U.S. President Joseph R. Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. These reflect a very high regard for the alliance and an affirmation of the Philippines’ vibrant democracy as embodied by our recent national elections, which their Embassy and some visiting US government officials observed firsthand. In the phone call between the presumptive President and POTUS this morning, both sides committed to work together to further strengthen the PH-U.S. alliance and broaden cooperation on issues of mutual interest and concern.”

Message from the US-Philippines Society

The US-Philippines Society offers its own congratulations to the President-elect and Vice President-elect, and applauds the spirit of bilateral and regional cooperation embodied in these messages. We look forward to working with the incoming Philippine administration, along with our partners in Washington to sustain close and mutually productive US-PH relations, as a core part of the Society’s mission over the next six years.
