Philippine Universities at ASU-Devex Hackathon 2020

The Arizona State University (ASU)-Devex Student Hackathon on December 10, 2020, included over 40 participating universities across six continents.  Competing teams worked on solutions to five real-world development challenges aligned with UN Sustainable Development goals. The five challenge categories were:

(1) Business Transforming Development

(2) Communicating for Impact

(3) Data Revolution

(4) Innovation at Scale

(5) Development Finance

The Judges for the winners were a distinguished group of development experts from the six continents participating in the Hackathon.

PHILIPPINE Finalists

Data Revolution: “ Image Analysis for Identifying Child Exploitation Materials Using Age and Skin Detection Algorithm” Adamson University

Innovation at Scale: “Appear.ed:  It Always Takes Two to Hi-Five” – On line education, mental health, games, business model with Apps), De La Salle University

Future of Development Finance: “Play Safe—A Cloud-Sourcing and Application That Re-Invents Donation Systems and Tracking, with Business  & Apps,” De La Salle University

WINNER in INNOVATION AT SCALE:  De La Salle University: Appear.ed

Other category winners were from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana (Business Transforming Development), University of Sao Paulo in Brazil (Communicating for Impact) , Arizona State University in the United States (Data Revolution) and Tecnologico de Monterrey, in Mexico (Future of Development Finance)

20 universities from Asia were in the competition.  Nine were from the Philippines.  They were: Adamson University; De La Salle University; Ateneo de Davao; University of Asia and the Pacific; Bulacan State University; University of San Carlos, Cebu; TIP—Technological Institute of Philippines;  University of the Cordilleras, Baguio;  Eastern Samar State University.
