Celebrating Philippine Culture and History: Displays and Performances at the Philippine Embassy during Around the World Embassy Tour

The US-Philippines Society appreciated the opportunity to participate in the Philippine Embassy’s Around the World Embassy Tour on May 4. Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez welcomed an estimated 4,000 visitors for a day of fun activities learning about pre-Hispanic Philippine writing system of Baybayin and Philippine history, popular Philippine delicacies, traditional dances and Kundiman songs.

Several visitors eagerly participated in Tinikling dance.

The Bulaklakan Dance or Dance of Floral Garland, a folkdance to celebrate the “Santa Cruz de Mayo” dedicated to the Virgin Mary during the Roman Catholic festivity held in May. Performed by the Mabuhay Dance Ensemble.

Celebrating AAPI

The US-Philippines Society joins the Filipino American communities in Washington DC and beyond in marking Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in May as a celebration of the contributions that generations of AAPIs have made to American history.

Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez and DCM Jaime Ascalon with USPHS President Emeritus Ambassador John Maisto, Tina Maisto, and book authors Erwin Tiongson and Kate Baker who engaged the American audience at the Around the World Embassy Tour. The authors provided historical anecdotes about lives of Filipinos and Americans and their contributions to communities in host countries.

Author Erwin Tiongson shows a picture of Sofia Reyes De Veyra, a Filipina advocate for women’s rights, was a resident of Washington DC. She learned English from the Thomasites.

Author Kate Baker with her book “Bounden Duty” about Price Cooper who had been an American teacher in the Philippines for two years before he contracted smallpox and died. Along with other Thomasites, he is attributed to have “helped Filipinos achieved a level of English language acquisition and tried to set a good example for the local teachers.”
