Strengthening Regional Engagements: Taiwan and the Philippines

On Wednesday, April 29, the US-Philippines Society hosted Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation Chairman Dr. Michael Hsiao and Executive Director Dr. Alan Yang for a presentation on Taiwan President Lai Ching-te’s Indo-Pacific policy and developments in Taiwan-Philippines relations. The discussion highlighted a major new emphasis on the Philippines in Taiwan’s regional engagement and a rapid increase in government and non-government exchanges. Supply chain cooperation and the Luzon Economic Corridor were highlighted as potential areas for US-Philippines-Taiwan cooperation, as well as quadrilateral cooperation with Japan. Attendees included Ambassador Ray Burghardt who was former American Institute in Taiwan Chairman and DCM at the US Embassy in the Philippines, USPHS President Emeritus Ambassador John Maisto, and representatives from the think tank and business community.
